I have received an email into Outlook Express. When I
click on it, the message will not appear. Outlook
Express will lock up and eventually the -Not Responding-
indictaor will appear. I have tried to create a rule
with the key words in the subject line in an attempt to
find and delete it, but Outlook Express will again lock
up once it detects that message.

I have been using this software for many moons now and
have not seen a message do this to a piece of email
software.

Any suggestions? Send Help... I can not remove this
email.

If you turn off the Preview Pane (View, Layout) in Outlook Express you can select and
delete a message without OE trying to open it. For OE5+ you can add a button to the Tool
Bar to toggle the Preview Pane off and on.

No luck! I closed the preview pane and the problem still
exists. As soon as I click on that particular email, OE
freezes and I have to Ctrl-Alt-Del to close the software
and load it up again. Any other suggestions?

That's odd, because with the preview pen disabled, OE shouldn't try to do anything with
that message.

You may have a corrupted Inbox (assuming that's the folder the message is in).

If messages are still accessible in the Inbox folder, do the following (otherwise skip to
the next procedure):
- Create a new mail folder (e.g. Mytemp)
- Copy (not Move) the existing good Inbox messages to the new mail folder (Mytemp)
- Close Outlook Express
- Locate the files Inbox.dbx (OE5+) in the mail directory and delete it. You can use
Start, Find (or Search), Files or Folders, Inbox.dbx to find it. On Win2000 you need
enable the display of Hidden or System files in the folder options and XP you need to use
the advanced options to find Hidden or System files.
- Open Outlook Express again.
- It will create a new empty Inbox. Copy the messages back from the Mytemp folder. You
can now delete the Mytemp folder.

If the above doesn't work
- Close Outlook Express
- Rename the file Inbox.dbx to Inboxold.dbx You can use Start, Find (or Search), Files or
Folders, Inbox.dbx to find it. On Win2000 you need enable the display of Hidden or System
files in the folder options and XP you need to use the advanced options to find Hidden or
System files.
- Open Outlook Express again.
- It will create a new empty Inbox.
- The following program may be able to recover some of the messages from the Inboxold.dbx
file.
DBXtract - http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx
- You can then open OE and select the Inbox and drag the recovered EML files back into it.
